Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which includes videos and comments on portrayals of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which examines female representations in the popular media narratives. Alongside working to highlight the problems surrounding the harassment and targeted assaults on women and as well as other minorities, she is dedicated to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes in the popular culture. With a master's in the field of political and social thinking from York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. As a university student she became interested in the issues surrounding gender identity and women's rights from a young age. It was a girl who wanted to create the series of videos on the internet which would explore how gender is represented in video games. However, she became the target of cyber-bullying. The incident did not deter her, rather it strengthened the determination of a feminist critic of media. In recognition of the many accomplishments she's made to feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that examines how women are depicted in contemporary pop culture.
