Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American actress and singer who toured for more than 40 years. London was a torch-singing singer famous for her smooth, mellow singing voice and her smooth, languid contralto was a recording artist on more than thirty albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955-1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, she recorded "Cry me a river", a track that she had introduced to her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for her performance in the role of Dixie McCall, a nurse in the show Emergency! Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her career as an actress. London's 35-year-long acting career began in 1944 when she was cast in films. These included roles as the lead female in a variety of westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the middle of the 1950s, she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. In 1969 she released her final studio album. However, she continued to be part of the emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979), she was joined by her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
